1. PROTECTING SPECIES (AND THE ENVIRONMENT)

One of our proposals is to restore old reefs and create new ones with artificial reefs that will serve as refuge substrates (bases on which organisms live). Thousands of species will colonize the AZTEC REEFS. By means of our technique, we intend to generate a reef ecosystem rich in biodiversity.

As well, the spread of artificial reefs serves to raise awareness of the importance of ecology and sustainable natural resources

Help us protect the turtles

The sea turtle sanctuary, Campamento Aeropuerto, releases over 12,000 turtles per year. And all work is done by volunteers, it involves daily efforts and they receive no financial assistance from the authorities. The Foundation Artificial Reefs Pure Life A.C (Fundacion Arrecifes Artificiales Pura Vida A. C.) and its species protection program supports these volunteers so that they continue protecting Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo’s sea turtle species for many more years.

2. AQUATIC SPORTS

Mexico counts on its wealth of beaches with great potential as tourist destinations to contribute to local and regional economies. For the above reason our proposal of building reefs to generate marine ecosystems will attract tourists looking for water sports such as snorkelling, diving, kayaking, surfing. These sports will open up a variety of related local activities to contribute to sustainable growth of the region.

3. SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES

Creating reefs of rich marine ecosystems also provide commercial fishing opportunities. If handled properly, reefs can be a source in areas where adequate conditions do not exist for life formation and fish farming.

The artificial reefs will also control drift net fishing, a dangerous practice damaging the deep seas. Establishing reefs will inhibit their use and promote a return to smaller fishing practices. The reefs will also prevent boats from dragging in strategic zones thus allowing the recuperation of sustainable fishery ecosystems.
